As someone who almost lost my way with Sanatana Dharma and bought into the nasty portrayals of our beliefs during my college days, I am pained to say that part of my negativity came from the inability of the adults around me to articulate the significance of our festivals. Though the adults may know the importance, conveying it succinctly to children and teenagers would go a long way in ensuring that the younger generation, especially those growing up in the West like I did, doesn't drift away due to a lack of information.
The very short book, "Hindu Festivals and their Sacred Days" by Swami Harshananda has been super helpful for me to fill in the gaps in my knowledge and improve my understanding of not just the big festivals but also other more obscure ones. Having become an uncle recently, I'm happy that this book will help me to satisfy my nephew's curiosity.
Thank you for sharing your story Sankalp! You make a great point about kids not understanding the deeper meaning behind Hindu festivals or sacred poojas. I suspect many adults don't know the significance either :) Thank you so much for the book suggestion! Below is a link to buy the book from the Vedanta Society of Northern California if anyone is interested:
